When choosing plastic packaging containers, many people only focus on appearance and ignore material differences. Many plastic bottles on the market look similar in transparency, but their material properties and safety boundaries are very different. Choosing the wrong container can easily lead to hidden dangers in use. Learning to distinguish PET material can help us avoid risks when storing food, skincare products, and dry goods.


The reliable method for identifying PET is to check the triangular recycling label at the bottom of the container, which is marked with the number 1 inside the triangle, indicating PET, with the chemical name polyethylene terephthalate. PET containers have high transparency and a shiny surface. The bottle body is lightweight and resilient, and gently pressing the bottle body will cause elastic rebound, making it less prone to direct breakage. The mineral water bottles, juice bottles, food storage jars, and wide mouthed jars for daily chemical cream that we see in our daily lives are mostly made of PET material.


Many consumers easily confuse PET with two common transparent plastics, PC and PP. PC plastic generally has thick walls, hard texture, and stronger heat resistance, and is often used for large capacity water bottles; PP material mostly presents a semi transparent texture, with a soft luster and a heat resistance of over 100 ℃. Takeout food boxes and household fresh-keeping boxes often use No. 5 PP material, which supports microwave heating. PET containers generally have thin walls and are prone to softening and deformation when the ambient temperature exceeds 60 ℃, which is a clear distinguishing feature between PET and the other two materials.


According to material experts, PET is widely used in the packaging fields of food, health products, and cosmetics due to its high transparency, good airtightness, and moderate cost. Qualified food grade PET containers are safe and reliable for storing drinking water, snacks, and dry goods at room temperature. But PET itself has its shortcomings: the microstructure of the material has tiny pores, which can easily adsorb oil and odors, and there may still be residual odors after cleaning. At the same time, it is not resistant to high temperatures, cannot be used to hold hot water or hot oil, and is not suitable for long-term repeated use. After multiple uses, the bottle wall will produce subtle scratches that are invisible to the naked eye, and the gaps are prone to accumulate dirt and bacteria.


Industry insiders suggest purchasing and using PET containers for disposable cold drinks and short-term storage of snacks and dry goods; If long-term repeated use, hot water storage, or microwave heating of food is required, priority should be given to selecting containers labeled as No. 5 PP material. Colored PET daily chemical cans, even after cleaning, are not recommended for storing food as there are safety hazards associated with colorants and residual chemicals.


In terms of environmental recycling, PET belongs to the plastic category with high recycling value. Discard the residual materials inside the discarded PET container, rinse it clean, and dispose of it in a recyclable bin. After recycling, PET can be processed into polyester fibers and packaging belts through processes such as crushing, cleaning, and purification. After high standard purification treatment, some of the recycled materials can also be used to make food packaging, achieving resource recycling and promoting low-carbon environmental protection.
